Appointed as Lex Mundi’s Director of Professional Development on August 1, 2007, John Claydon has extensive experience in international and comparative law teaching and in professional legal education.
After receiving a first law degree from Queen's University in Kingston, Canada, and a Master of Laws from the University of Virginia, John taught full-time at Queen's for 15 years. During this period, he served as Associate Dean for three years and was a Visiting Scholar at Yale Law School and a Visiting Professor at Osgoode Hall Law School.
In the 1980's, John focused his career on professional legal education. In 1987 he joined one of Canada's largest law firms as the first full-time professional development director in the country, a position he held for 11 years. In the mid 1990’s, he returned to the academic world as Director of the Professional Development Program at Osgoode Hall Law School, with responsibility for planning 17 different part-time Master of Laws specializations and 40 continuing education courses yearly. Immediately before joining Lex Mundi, John designed a comprehensive in-house program for another major national Canadian law firm.
John's professional association activities include chairing the Law School Special Interest Group of the Association for Continuing Legal Education, seven years on the Board of the Professional Development Consortium (one as Chair), three years as Vice-Chair of the Continuing Legal Education Committee of the ABA' s Section of International Law and Practice, and 13 years (four as Chair) on the Board of the Canadian Council on International Law.
Throughout his involvement in professional education, John has continued to teach part-time and has organized and taught courses for judges in Vietnam (1995) and Albania (2002). He is published widely in international law and professional legal education and is admitted to practice law in Ontario.
